This video has been viewed by millions worldwide, most who have never heard of Dutch Sint Maarten or French St Martin, so they certainly have never heard of jouvert and 2nd day parade. Many people when they hear ‘carnival’, automatically they assume a fair, or Brazillian girls doing a Samba topless in the middle of the road. But Caribbean Carnivals are better 🙂
Eddie from the 4M Band gave me some music in 2010. So I listened to the music, but I didn’t know what to do with it. Eddie and the 4M band tend to flow towards Soca ‘fusion’, they have an eclectic mix of music and even use Middle Eastern Instruments.
So I had Jasmin Philips’ Survivor Troupe dancing to the 4M Band that year, and the 2nd Day Parade was the most outrageous that I’d ever seen, so I decided to edit “Wuk and Drop” by the 4M Band to the Survivor girls at 2nd Day Parade.
2nd Day Parade is very significant, because its almost a combination of Jouvert and Carnival. In the Grand Carnival Parade, is when you see all of the elaborate costumes, and outfits- and it is a competition with a points system, so the ladies are on their best behavior.
The Parade after the Grand Parade, is called the 2nd Day Parade. The ladies, bands and troupes have already been ‘judged’, 2nd Day is the time for them to be in costume, but to ‘free up’, with a lot fewer restrictions.
At jouvert there are no formal troupes, just friends and family who hang out and ‘jam’ together.
So I tried to edit the video to the new song, and the video 4M Band with The Survivor Dancers “Wuk and Drop” was created.
And it took off.
The Carnival videos are uploaded to multiple youtube accounts, at first there was not Carnival SXM Youtube accounts, so I would upload, sometimes more than once to various Youtube channels.
The video, it doesn’t matter when or where I uploaded, it gets ridiculous.
It it considered ‘adult’, and ‘strictly for an adult audience’, but the feedback worldwide has been overwhelmingly positive.
People worldwide, are genuinely curious about our culture when they see our videos. Some are shocked, because there is so much ‘dry humping’, and outrageous behaviour.
I don’t just post the ‘wuk up’ girls and wuk up music, I also post the behind the scenes, pre carnival preparations, band preparations, and turns out many other countries and islands are now taking from our festivities- they want to be wilder than the SXM girls- it’s not possible.
There are critics and naysayers who believe that the videos are TOO obscene, provocative etc, but my strategy to videography and uploading is pretty simple- I don’t post boring videos- I post videos that even when the video isn’t the best quality, the music is what captures the audience, jiggling girls always help.
When I go to carnival to cover it, I want to see wuk up, wine, jumpin’, bachannal, I don’t want to see models, I get enough of that during the PJD2 Caribbean Queen Pageant.
My videos tend to be amateur, and they cost virtually nothing to create other than my time, and yet my videos kill the big budget, big island videos because the audience LOVE seeing the behind the scenes, and their first question is… Where is St Maarten? And many ask about getting to St Maarten to participate.
Nothing that I video and upload is staged, it is all real and raw SXM carnival. People are used to the ‘edited’ version, with the ladies daintly tipping down frontstreet, waving and smiling.
I like to catch them on Frontstreet and on the Emmaplein after the Coors Light, Rum and Redbull has kicked in, when they are rouding the Sundial School, that’s when you want to catch the dancers in action 🙂
In the past few years 4M Band and Survivor have been viewed and heard by millions of people, and the majority of them love our culture, dance and music.
Dutch Sint Maarten is only 16 square miles, but in 5 years there have been over 20 million views to the carnival videos. The views to the photos are also in the millions. The music is contagious.
Every band has it’s own individual style, but if the music is not good, then the people aren’t listening or viewing.
4M Band got some good ‘chunes’. Their music is good, because it doesn’t matter whether I upload their video in 2009 or 2015, the audiences flock to it. The Survivor Dancers are the best, people love the expressions on their faces, and the expression of the crowds, when they ‘go on bad’.
St Maarten – St Martin enjoys some of the most freedom when it comes to expression, a freedom that can’t be found in most of the world-no wonder the videos are popular. One of the largest audiences who view SXM Carnival and Jouvert videos would be of course the Middle East, The United States, France and the Netherlands. The don’t have one day out of the year to dress anyhow and hump anything, without anyone batting an eye. We get one full month out of each year (2 weeks Dutch Sint Maarten/2 weeks French Saint Martin) to let loose. Then we get to take the boat to Anguilla, Saba and Statia and enjoy their carnival.
Even critics can’t stop watching the Sxm Carnival videos. The claimed to be shocked, repulsed, appalled- but when you check the analytics they are the biggest viewers, so haters have no power on my Youtube Channels.
Enjoy this now ‘classic’ video
