PHILIPSBURG–The St. Maarten Carnival Development Foundation (SCDF) reported over the weekend good registration all around for the 2014 Carnival Season. As is customary, the SCDF opened its registration process for most areas of Carnival on September 1, and closed this process on December 1, 2013.
The foundation reported that all but one area of carnival received good registration, that being the Junior Carnival Queen Pageant; by the time registration closed only one potential contestant had registered for that pageant. As such, the SCDF will not host it as part of the 2014 Carnival celebrations.
However, everything else is looking good. There are over 20 individual singers registered to compete in the Senior Calypso Competition, 15 for the Road March Competition, 10 contestants for the Ms. Mature Carnival Pageant, seven for the Senior Pageant and seven for the Teen Pageant.
The SCDF is more flexible with the registration for the troupes and bands which are always completed sometime in late February. “We are extremely pleased with the registration figures. A sign of a good and growing product is how the community supports and participates in that product. The support for Carnival is great and the participation is growing rapidly,” the SCDF said in a release.
The 2014 Carnival schedule also features five international concerts and the return of the PJD2 Caribbean Queen Pageant. The SCDF said there are still some new additions to the season which will be announced.
Carnival officially opens on April 21 and runs until May 5. There are several pre-Carnival events and Road to Carnival parties sponsored by the TelEm Group of Companies that start from as early as March. In total the 2014 Carnival season is comprised of 25 days of Carnival activities.
